The 60's 1960 Twenty-five of the community's leaders created the Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation to accept and distribute charitable gifts and to build a permanent foundation for broad "civic and cultural purposes."
1963 Arthur Cupler, the Fargo attorney who devoted much of his efforts since 1955 to establish the Foundation, leaves large gift to the Foundation to create its first scholarship fund.
1965 Foundation awards $5,000 in grants.
1967 The Foundation, also known as The Community Trust, promotes the idea that "anyone can be a philanthropist."
The 70’s 1970 C. Warner Litten begins a four-year term as president of the Foundation, following Norman D. Black, Jr.
1977 The Foundation receives national attention for the unusual Clarence Schilling Fund for "birds and squirrels."

The 80’s 1980 Foundation assets reach $1 million with nearly 20 named component funds.
1986 Foundation opens an office for the first time; it is co-located with United Way.
The 90’s 1990 FMAF has grown to include forty-nine component funds with assets of more than $5.5 million.
1993 The $250,000 Hand in Hand grants program is launched to support family friendly communities.
1995 Annual contributions reach $2.1 million in a single year. Assets reach $12 million and include 100 component funds.
1997 In its role as convener of regional initiatives, FMAF linked resources with community needs to build the Flood Clearinghouse generating more than $2 million for flood recovery work in the Red River Valley.
1998 $1.1 million in grants distributed. Project Tomorrow is launched to build a "vision for the future of the community."
1999 Two area entrepreneurs entrust gifts to FMAF, creating the Gary and Connie Tharaldson Fund and the Doug Burgum Family Fund. Foundation manages 135 component funds. |

Present 2001 Foundation announces the creation of the Women's Fund to improve the quality of life for all people by enriching the lives of women and girls.
2002 All time record year for grants distributed: $2 million.
2004 Foundation assets under management reach nearly $40 million.
2005 Giving Guide, a key charitable resource on community needs, is released.
2007 FMAF plays instrumental role in statewide charitable giving legislation.
Future 2010 Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation celebrates 50 years of personalized service and local expertise as the area's charitable giving resource. |
