Grant Guidelines

The Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation awards grants each year according to:
1) Current and emerging community needs
2) Priorities established by the Board.
3) Grants that:
     - effect a broad segment of our community
     - leverage support from other sources
     - promote collaboration, without duplicating services
     - strengthen organization self-sufficiency and long term stability
     - show realistic planning and management
     - focus on problem solving

What types of programs/projects are funded by the FMAF?

Arts and Culture
Community Betterment
(civil rights, social action, advocacy, community improvement, capacity building, philanthropy and volunteerism)
Education
Environment and Animals

Health
Human Rights
Human Services
(public protection, employment, food, nutrition, agriculture, housing, shelter, public safety, disaster preparedness, recreation, leisure, sports, athletics and youth development)
Youth Recreation

What types of programs/projects normally will NOT be funded by the FMAF?

Annual appeals or membership drives; Capital debt reduction; Capital campaigns; Individuals or for-profit organizations; Organizations with outstanding final reports from previous FMAF grants; Political projects; Religious groups for religious purposes; Travel for groups; and Retroactive funding for any project expenses incurred before the decision date.

Who may apply for a Grant?

Our grants are awarded to tax exempt organizations classified as 501(c)(3) public charities as defined by the Internal Revenue Service, religious institutions and governmental agencies.  The organizations must be located in or directly benefit the residents of Cass County, North Dakota and/or Clay County, Minnesota.  Grant seekers outside of Cass and Clay Counties must provide information on Cass and Clay residents served.  If your organization/program does not have a tax-exempt ruling from the IRS, please complete the Fiscal Sponsorship Commitment Form (see download links above).

How many grant rounds are offered by FMAF?

There is one grant round each year.  2010 Grant Proposals will be accepted anytime BEFORE 4:30pm on April 20, 2010, for projects and/or programs that begin after June 1, 2010.

What is the Proposal format accepted by FMAF?

Please submit your proposal on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper printed on one side only, with one-inch margins.  Proposal materials should not be bound, inserted in protective sleeves or prepared in other types of notebook form.  Please invest your time in content rather than presentation.  There is a 5-page maximum.  See the Proposal Checklist for details (see download links above).  Attachments and brochures are not included in the 5-page maximum.

What is the Proposal process?

Organizations applying for funding are required to use the FMAF Grant Proposal Forms available online (see download links above) or by request from our office located at 502 First Avenue North, Suite 202, Fargo, ND 58102; telephone 701-234-0756.  You may also request the forms via email addressed to cher@areafoundation.org.  Grant Proposals will be accepted anytime BEFORE 4:30pm on April 20, 2010.  The Grants Committee will review completed proposals, and applicants will be notified on or before May 31, 2010.

What can I expect after I submit a Grant Proposal?

You will receive a postcard indicating that we have received your proposal and that it is complete.  Foundation staff will give your proposal a thorough review and may conduct research, schedule a site visit or interview your staff.  The Foundation Grants Committee will review grant requests and make recommendations to the Board of Governors for grant awards.
